Poll: Meister Captures Majority of Undecided Voters
December 3, 2009
The Democratic primary for U.S. Senate is wide open, with nearly half of voters undecided about who they will support in February 2010. Jacob Meister captures the largest portion of undecided voters in an informed statewide poll for the seat previously held by President Barack Obama.
The poll of 590 registered voters illustrates that the Democratic Primary is wide open and Meister is poised to capitalize on the significant number of undecided voters.
Meister experiences the most gains (22%) among all candidates in an informed trial heat, where survey respondents received balanced positive and negative information about each candidate. In the informed test, Meister overtakes David Hoffman and Cheryle Robinson Jackson and directly competes with State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias for the lead. Meister captures twice as many undecided voters as the other candidates.
While nearly half of Democratic primary voters are uncommitted in the election for U.S. Senator, the poll found a significant majority of Giannoulias support is weak and vulnerable. Despite an expensive campaign for State Treasurer in 2006, serving as a statewide official for nearly three years, and declaring his candidacy for U.S. Senate early in 2009, 44% of voters polled do not even know who he is.
“This primary about jobs and the economy and an environment that creates jobs that can’t be shipped overseas,” Meister said. “Illinois voters are looking for a fresh perspective and they clearly responded to my focus on the issues important to them: secure employment, access affordable health care and stable pensions they can count on. I was confident that we were running a campaign that is in tune with voters’ concerns, and the poll affirmed that,” Meister said.
Meister for U.S. Senate commissioned Fako & Associates, Inc., of Lisle, Illinois to conduct the survey. A summary of the survey can be found at meisterforsenate.com.
