Students Hear Jobs, Education Message

December 1, 2009

Jacob Meister, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, brought his campaign Tuesday to first-time voters, parents and students of Gage Park High School.

“You can’t fool young people,” said Meister about students in Victor Harbison’s civics classes. “They were by far the toughest audience I’ve had yet and I was really impressed with how interested they were not only in the political process, but in the people who may represent them as well.”

Meister, the only Democratic candidate to agree to attend the event, spoke to students and parents about how a bill becomes a law, the duties of a United States senator, the need for Americans to access affordable health care, student loan funding, and his education platform.

“These students can see what’s happening around them and they want answers to the same questions other voters are asking: ‘Will I be able to get a job? Will I be able to pursue my dreams?,” Meister said. “I love seeing this kind of enthusiasm and curiosity about politics and government from our students, because it won’t be long before we’re following their lead.”

Meister discussed his plan to help build a new educational infrastructure that focuses on students one at a time, helping enhance their progress from early childhood education through college, ensuring their education reflects the skills and knowledge they will need to find employment in the new and emerging industries of tomorrow.
