A Call to Action on World AIDS Day

December 1, 2009

On World AIDS Day 2009, Jacob Meister, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, calls for increased funding for HIV research, especially for the development of an effective HIV vaccine. He also urges all Americans to take a moment to reflect about those who have died from AIDS, and celebrate those who are surviving and leading full and active lives.

“Since 1987 with the inception of World AIDS day, AIDS/HIV activists and the medical community have put the spotlight on the disease that still haunts us but is not necessarily the death sentence it had been,” Meister said. “The development of an effective vaccine will reduce the incidence of HIV and number of AIDS cases in our lifetime.”

Meister is the first openly gay candidate to run for the U.S. Senate.

In his campaign, Meister supports the recent federal extension of the CARE Act, which provides medical care, medication and support services to about half a million people with AIDS, most of them low-income.
