Moving Illinois forward

The people of Illinois deserve a U.S. senator who has the knowledge and experience to make policy that solves the problems of today and ensures prosperity and stability for tomorrow. I have worked on Capitol Hill in the House of Representatives. I have worked in every other level of government: state, county and local. But I’m not a career politician looking for my next office.

I believe that a progressive voice coming from a different path can lead effectively and with integrity. I believe that the people of Illinois are ready to hear my voice and join me on that path.

When I left government work 20 years ago, I didn’t expect to return. I was disenchanted by the revolving door of career politicians who used each elective office as a stepping stone to the next, higher position. Most didn’t have more than a sliver of the real-world experience that makes for good government.

I have that real-world experience. I have practiced commercial law in Chicago for the last 20 years handling cases that involve pensions, commerce, economic development, foreign trade and the use of technology to develop new and profitable businesses.

I have represented small businesses. I have represented banks, real estate developers and mortgage brokers. Over the last year in my law practice I have seen the effects of economic hardship firsthand: small and large companies cast adrift, with projects in foreclosure, credit frozen and employees let go.

This has compelled me to run for the U.S. Senate. I know what the problems are and where the solutions come from. I know how policies made in Washington impact our communities and our daily lives. I know how government and business work – and I understand the connection between the two. I know how to help our state and our country emerge stronger as we heal our economy.

Change is as much in the details as it is in the vision. This 20/20 Vision statement is more than a set of ideas. It is a plan of action.
